Iliana Romanul is a fine art photographer whose work explores presence, solitude, and the quiet experience of the natural world. Working primarily in New England and the North Atlantic, she photographs birds, wildlife, water, weather, and northern landscapes in black and white and restrained color.

Her photographs often place a lone form, animal, or gesture against weather, distance, shadow, or open space. Through close observation and exclusive use of natural light, her work explores solitude as a state of attention and how stillness, distance, weather, and light shape the experience of seeing.

Romanul works at an ethical distance, relying on patience and changing weather. Her field practice follows Leave No Trace principles and always prioritizes the well-being of wildlife and habitat over the photograph. Post-production is limited to careful refinements of tone, contrast, color, and atmosphere.

Her photographs have been exhibited at the Griffin Museum of Photography, Cape Cod Art Center, Praxis Gallery, and Photo Artfolio, and published, featured, or recognized by WBUR, Mass Audubon, Black & White Magazine, and Yankee Magazine. Her photograph Winter Trace was noted in Mark Feeney’s 2026 Boston Globe review of the Griffin Museum of Photography’s 32nd Annual Members Juried Exhibition.
